Fashion Era Challenge: The '80s

I give to you: The '80s !! :D

Ahaha! Tried to recreate the hair (never my forte) and clown makeup. Man, the whole makeup kit box had to come down. Had to put the robe on to keep the makeup off my dress. The bathroom is strewn with hair products. The diffuser is out. The teasing comb. All throughout the 'photo shoot' my hair was deflating. My current hair products are not up to the cardboard effect. Just don't have the fuscia shadows and lipsticks anymore. And I knocked off a giant clip-on earring trying to give you the sassy '80s head tilt.

Ahahaha! And this all took hours. How do you guys whip up your fashion challenges so fast?!

    WOOOHOOOOO

    YAY, YAY, YAY.

    MORE '80s. My Best.

    LOVE

Killer to the power Killer, Prinncess Ra Ra Skirt. Bonus points for teased hair, plastic earrings, and clown make-up. WELL DONE.

    *passes the hairspray*

The epitome of the 80s. Fantastic job.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

This is brilliant! And, okay, so it took hours -- you look gorgeous! This is both authentic and wildly impractical -- surely you get bonus points for that?  ;)

Oh, and where is Lilypup's diamond studded collar?

  • MTBGirl replied 9 years ago

That is wonderful Rachylou! All your time and effort really paid off!

  • LACeleste replied 9 years ago

Wow Rachy!  Thank you for going all out!  So great!

  • Diana replied 9 years ago

Awesome!  The hair and the makeup totally make it.

You just reminded me that I actually have a tiered skirt like this from the 80's.  (As in, I actually owned it in the late 80's when I was probably around 8 or 9.  No idea how it still fits.  I think it was originally very voluminous and elasticated, and at some point my mom took out the waist?)

  • harmonica replied 9 years ago

You make me love the 80's more. Perfect!!

  • Tanya replied 9 years ago

Absolutely incredible! Love the effort you put in your hair and makeup. I don't bother with it, hence the process is faster for me.

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Thanks! And thanks for the hairspray... I'm taking donations. I need MORE. Ahaha!

This is my prom dress (I'm dating myself!). The original hair was a Prince pompadour. Can you believe I still have some shoes from the '80s in my closet at my mom's? I wore black pumps then too... but I noticed they would have been a wide point with a barely there toe box (if that's the correct term) compared to today. I was also fatter than I am now. I think the skirt would have sat a little higher. But I could be wrong. I was surprised it fit as well as it does. Have I gotten fat again? Lol.

Totally 80's! I so love that ra-ra skirted dress. I remember having big disc clip-on earrings to compliment my mullet! You nailed this look Rachy. Oh and in answer to your question...a glass of wine and a gallon of hairspray help the process along quickly :D

    So much awesomeness here.

  • rabbit replied 9 years ago

    Girls just wanna have fun!!

    FABULOUS.

Yeah hair and makeup from the high maintenance era took eons.  I don't think I even own hairspray now, let alone Aqua Net.  You did a great job and the flouncy dress is amazing.

Okay one of my earliest fashion related memories was sneaking in to look at Limited Express at the mall in middle school (I wore thrift mostly, so it was off-limits).   The cube was lit with neon orange light, they were blasting French new wave pop, and the salesgirls had the ultimate in teased hair (yours is good) with iridescent green, purple and blue lipstick (like a beetles wing).  My 11 year old heart almost overloaded from the forbidden coolness.

  • approprio replied 9 years ago

Oh yes. Please put on an embellished moto and biker boots and go Desperately Seek some Susans. You can't go on dating yourself. You deserve more than that. So much more.

  • CocoLion replied 9 years ago

Sorry to say but, this is the kind of 80s style that I detested in the 80s.  The big hair, the poufy dresses, the loud colors, the even bigger make-up.  Still, you've managed to make this look much better than it actually was back then.  :-)

    ETa:  Aussie Scrunch Spray.

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Oh ja! The neon overload cool. Makes the heart go pitter pat! Lol.

  • Sharon replied 9 years ago

This is so great. I love that this is your actual prom dress. Thank you so much for all the effort- it is completely 80s-tastic!

  • texstyle replied 9 years ago

    Love this - great job!

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Lol. I detested it too, Denise. Prom was the only time I did this. The rest of the time I was in a parka with union jack on the back and peg legs, wishing I had a Vespa.

  • Caro in Oz replied 9 years ago

    RA RA Rachy - fantastic.

  • Dee replied 9 years ago

This is the epitome of 80s prom! I can't get over the ALGO dress - pattern, tiers, and contrast edging.

And I admire your dedication to the challenges!

  • catgirl replied 9 years ago

Could not be any more authentic, Rachy!

  • Aubergine replied 9 years ago

So awesome!!! And I can't believe you still fit into your prom dress!

  • Adelfa replied 9 years ago

Oh, Rachy. You know I love you, right?

Re: earrings--I managed to palm all of my 80's earrings off on 20-something DD, who said nostalgically, "I remember when you wore these when I was a little girl and I thought you looked so pretty!"

Re: hairspray--our priest shared on Easter Vigil that on his very first Easter Vigil, a woman "Who must have put on two cans of hairspray" leaned towards her daughter (and hence her daughter's lit candle) and went up in a fireball! "It went out quickly but the congregation panicked!"

As for the rest of it, I only wish I could remember the '80s. Let alone what I wore!

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

The hair is killing me! You are it - well worth the effort!

  • Summer replied 9 years ago

This is fantastic, Rachy! I can almost smell the hairspray from here.

  • Sara L. replied 9 years ago

This is great!  I can't believe that you still have your prom dress and it still fits.

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

    Pure awesome.

  • Vicki replied 9 years ago

Rachylou, YOU ARE AMAZING and I am laughing so much at your description (clown makeup...so true!) and the "process" you went through to create this '80s masterpiece.

  • Style Fan replied 9 years ago

I know the hair process.  I got married in the 80s.  High maintenance era.  I am still washing hairspray out of my hair.  You have nailed it again.  Amazing.  Love your dress.  And the make up.  How did 80s girls ever get out of the house!

  • annagybe replied 9 years ago

Yeah wow! You stepped out of my high school year book.
I remember my first department store make over in the 80's at the Lancome counter. It was vertical stripes eyeshadow of lemon yellow, bubble gum pink and a turquoise blue. I thought I looked so good and mature. I don't think my mom bought me any of the make-up.

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

You are so much fun! You must have been the queen of the prom...so cool.

  • abc replied 9 years ago

So fun. And wow I forgot about Aussie scrunch spray til now! I can smell it!
