Fashion Era Challenge: Dickensian

Ok. This is an *inspired by* because, hehe, I will wear outside and I'm cold. Lilypup is going to declare walktime soon. So no bonnet. Also, I think I just gave away my lace trim pin tuck top not realising it goes with this skirt.

Do y'all know how hard it is to snap a pic with one hand in a handmuff? Cannot be done. (And btw, *Don't say 'Don't.' Say 'Do not.' ;) )

Bonus pics of Lilypup displaced by skirt on the sofa :)

Wow, Rachy, this is so cool! I think you win the award for the biggest skirt. Lily pup is adorable as ever.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

HAH. Brilliant - both you and Lilypup - who are beautifully colour coded. Straight out of the 19th century. You need little round metal glasses to complete the look.

I want to see that bonnet.

  • rabbit replied 9 years ago

    WOW

You have a muff and everything!!  Here we see ladies and gentlemen, the benefits of not purging ones closet too ruthlessly -- one can pull off AWESOME Victorian period wear.  (Do you have a bonnet - just for indoors? Although the middle part low bun hair is doing the job honestly).  Yeah I also realized that pin-tuck blouses were kind of a thing through a lot of fashion history, just not right now, bummer.

Lillypup is completely cute interfering and tonally works with the sweater.

Madame, I am impressed and wish to gift you with a lace knickknack table doily and maybe a tasteful framed floral spray made of human hair. ;)

  • Diana replied 9 years ago

Totally amazing.  You have a muff.  Of course you have a muff.  ;)

  • carter replied 9 years ago

Amazing! I have a feeling this is going to be a week of great fun for you...and for all of us who get to see these fabulous creations!

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Hahaha! V8 juice head smack. Should have thought of little round wire glasses!

And oh my ever so sincere and effusive gratitude for such a thoughtful gift of a 'tasteful floral spray made of human hair'!!! (lolz!)

But yes, no need to purge more than every 300 years... ;)

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

I'm not sure where the bonnet has gotten off to... I couldn't find it yesterday :(

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

No worries. Muff and Pup make up for lack of bonnet.

  • Sal replied 9 years ago

    Awesome Rachylou...love it.
I hope you are going to feed gruel to orphans...

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Oh orphan gruel. Cannot forget orphan gruel!

But y'all understand, I'd fear to wear the bonnet outside as to this I feel might be over the top. Tee hee.

To prove we are outside... More selfies...

  • Ingunn replied 9 years ago

I adore this on you. It is so right!

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

    Thx, Ingunn!

Note to self: lesson learned - the bloomers are not optional. The draft is something fierce...

  • Inge replied 9 years ago

Re:  taking pictures while sporting a hand muff: ah yes, the challenges of being a Victorian lady in 2015!-)

This is brilliant, Rachy, from the colour combo and the awesome skirt to your 'do that is so spot on. Also: loving the sneakers in lieu of the more expected black lace-up booties;-)

  • replied 9 years ago

Perfect in every way! You are a genius! Mr Squeers...bring the gruel!!!

  • Sharon replied 9 years ago

OMG, you must be stopping traffic! Brilliant.

  • AM replied 9 years ago

So perfect. I just adore this -- and your matching campanion.

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

Outstanding! Yay for wearing it out- because it's fun and YOU! Pool lil pup displaced from the couch by your skirt. LOL.

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

Completely and totally fun, funky, and awesome! I wouldn't have expected anything less from you.

    Cosmo Edward says "Hi Lilypup!"

  • Ledonna N. replied 9 years ago

You are fantastic that is all

  • Alassë replied 9 years ago

I was looking forward to this one. :)

  • Dee replied 9 years ago

Perfect! And I love the mattern mixing between the collar and the skirt!

  • Lyn D. replied 9 years ago

    :)

  • catgirl replied 9 years ago

You win.  You gotta win something for this.  Lilypup looks displeased, but I'm sure a walk cured her.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 9 years ago

    Yes!!

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

HAHAHAHA. I only *just* noticed the sneaks. Great modern touch.

  • harmonica replied 9 years ago

Great x 3! And the muff! So adorable!

  • Aubergine replied 9 years ago

I had a feeling this would be great, and definitely wasn't disappointed!

  • MuseumGal replied 9 years ago

Oh Rachy.  Fab fab fab.  Bonus points for the muff!

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

You are awesome. They should invent a puff with hidden selfie stick. But I must say Lilypup is looking rather like she is bracing herself for the worst.

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Hehe. Don't know if Lilypup likes sharing the sofa with the skirt, but she enjoys floofing it and hiding under, hehe.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

This is unbelievably good. That skirt!! I am swooning. Love Lilypup's expressions, too.

  • Runcarla replied 9 years ago

Found the perfect accessory on eBay.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

What great photos! I love the outdoors pics, and it's great to see you actually did wear your Victorian look outside. You are too much, Rachylou. I'm with Angie--love the sneakers for adding a current touch to this outfit!

  • Gaylene replied 9 years ago

Dickensian, but with a (an?) uniquely, Rachylou "May I have some more.......but is it organic?" kind of vibe. ;)

  • rabbit replied 9 years ago

    lololol Runcarla's earrings, I can't stop laughing

  • anne replied 9 years ago

Wow - I went offline for Easter and come back to this!!!  Haven't worked out the challenge yet, but loving your iteration. How did you come to have a skirt like that!!

  • CocoLion replied 9 years ago

You always add so much fun and humor to the forum, I love that about you!

  • tulle replied 9 years ago

That is one magnificent skirt,  and you get extra points for walking your dog in it!  Have you ever read Virginia Woolf's little masterpiece, Flush?  It's the story of the romance between Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, told from her  dog's point of view.

  • lyn67 replied 9 years ago

Hah you would have been trendy then (and now) for the reason of the unexpected justapositions:-), showstopping,  true to era outfit(and pup)!:-)

  • Windchime replied 9 years ago

Magnificent! Where did you ever find that skirt??

Lilypup is a fine Dickensian dog. :)

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

    Right:

    1. Omg. Runcarla. The earrings are a FIND. Totally, also, a hipster's next job - after they've turned the back bedroom into an abattoir for artisan sausage / knitting workshop... What to do with the chicken heads...
    2. May I have some more.......but is it organic?" - How can this not already be on the way to becoming a Hipsterville PSA poster?
    3. As does Lilypup is a fine Dickensian dog need to become a stealth sticker.
Have not read Flush. Clearly I'll have to :D

  • annagybe replied 9 years ago

    I want that skirt!

  • Gigi replied 9 years ago

YLF should have its own reality show where we all dress up in clothes from different fashion eras and have to hunt down the pieces we need. Ha ha.

Rachylou, this outfit is amazing! Do you have a petticoat on under that skirt? Or is the skirt that way by itself?

  • Beth Ann replied 9 years ago

You have a closet that is ready for anything!  Love the fullness of the skirt, even without bloomers.

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Ah. This is a skirt that requires hoops. I have on hoops (!)... evil cackle ;>

  • Gigi replied 9 years ago

Dang, hoops?! Where do I get some of those? Seriously? (I like to play dress-up for theme parties.)

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

I'll see if I can find the name. Handmade of course.

  • Style Fan replied 9 years ago

I can only imagine what your closet looks like!  You are amazing.  What a creative mind.  Totally awesome looks.

  • Gigi replied 9 years ago

OK, I'll check back in. But I wonder if I could even find a skirt to go with the hoops...where did you get the skirt?

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

    Same lady...

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Right, what do I know? Hehe! Apparently my hoops are a commercial product made by Darling, worn also with wedding dresses, and the lady who made the skirt didn't sew in a tag - bummer! There's lots on Etsy, tho, I think. And there's this online store: Recollections
